Environmental Stewardship

and Biophilic Design

Acting as stewards of the planet and leaders in sustainability  requires a holistic approach to every project. We consider the lifecycle of the building, work to make it more ecologically efficient, and study how our actions will affect the community. LEED certifications and Net Zero Energy metrics are basic requirements for us. We intend to make each neighborhood better than it was before.

This process begins by understanding the evolution of the land we’re developing to design its use for the next 1000 years. Knowing the ecosystem of each region helps us determine the most innovative approaches to renewable energy, including rooftop farms and greenhouses, bioswales, and creative ways to replace pavement with plants. An awareness of interdependence strengthens our connections with local food producers and other community partners before beginning any project.

“For hundreds of years, we have mined resources from our planet with little to no consideration for the vibrancy of life. Our focus is on shifting toward a regenerative model. Sustainability is not enough. Our primary goal is to develop projects that generate more energy than we use, that rebuild soil, that filter and purify rainwater, while creating new jobs and infusing investment into the communities where we work.”

We also consider the origin of our materials, as well as the carbon footprint of creating and transporting them.

We incorporate biophilic designs, such as thoughtful landscaping or a multi-story interior green wall. Natural daylight infuses our structures, reducing energy consumption.

After constructing buildings that will last for hundreds of years, we curate experiences that are both timeless yet nimble enough to adapt to changing circumstances.

In our daily operations, we analyze how our actions affect water utilization and waste streams. We collaborate with our commercial tenants on intelligent practices by offering trainings in sorting, composting, and recycling, with quantifiable results and feedback.

A pillar of our mission is a commitment to sustainability that augments long-term investments.  Along with the experts in our affiliate company, Bio-Logical Capital (read more from Bio-Logical Capital about Defining  Stewardship Development), we constantly challenge ourselves to progress in ways that benefit the built and natural environments.
